Frosty Air Con Coils? This Is Not A Good Sign

We all know that in the summer, air conditioning is the best way to keep your home cool, and summer seems to be coming earlier and earlier each year. We also know that in theory, air con units need to be cold, so if you see ice forming on the refrigeration coils, that’s normal. Unfortunately, it isn’t, and it is a sign of the need to get a qualified engineer out as soon as possible.

If ice has formed on your coils, chances are that the level of refrigerant has dropped, and the whole system is out of balance. Left unchecked this can cause serious problems with your whole system, so early attention will minimize the cost of repairs.

Second, if you do run an air conditioning system with icy coils, it isn’t going to be very efficient, and very quickly you can have consumed the same amount in additional electricity as the cost of a visit from a mechanic. So, what can be the cause of such a problem?

In some instances, the air surrounding the cooling coils can be excessively humid. In other instances, it can be a malfunctioning component – it isn’t always down to a problem with the level of refrigerant, though this is one of the most common reasons.

What you must never assume is that scraping off the ice will solve the problem – it won’t, and the coils will simply form new ice. More to the point, the refrigeration coils are not robust, so chances are if you try and ‘de-ice’ them, you’ll damage them and end up with a hefty repair bill that could have been avoided.

If you see ice on your air conditioning coils, there is only one thing to do, and that is give us a call us here at Petrocelli Services and we’ll get you sorted out and your system running efficiently again in no time at all.
